The Q Laser and Med Spa | Day Spa VS Med Spa: What's The Difference?
By Stephen Prendiville, M.D. | Quigley Eye Specialists

You may have been to a day spa for a massage or a facial, but you may not realize that there are different kinds of spas – including med spas.

With more people staying at home and working remotely, many people are turning to spas for relaxation and rejuvenation to overcome the stresses of daily living.

A day spa offers treatments primarily for relaxation, such as massages, facials, manicures and pedicures. There also is a medical spa, or “med spa,” that goes beyond what a day spa can offer to provide medical grade treatments with longer lasting results. Think of it as “rejuvenation” at a med spa compared with “relaxation” at a day spa.

Another major difference between a day spa and a med spa is the presence of a physician. Med spas require oversight by a licensed physician because the treatments offered are more aggressive than what you’d find at a day spa. This determines the type of treatments that can be offered. The most aggressive treatments a day spa can perform are designed to improve the texture and appearance of the skin with facials, microdermabrasions and superficial chemical peels.

Med spa procedures, on the other hand, address deep facial wrinkles and acne scarring with higher intensity lasers, deeper chemical peels, and injections such as Botox and other fillers, as well as surgical options.

According to the American Medical Spa Association, there are more than 4,300 med spas in the United States. This number has grown by 50 percent since 2016. The menu of services offered has grown as well. Many med spas now offer skin tightening procedures and body contouring.

The newest med spa to open in our area is The Q Laser & Med Spa in north Naples, operated by Quigley Eye Specialists.

This new spa is the first in the area to offer all of the above services plus these additional medical procedures all under one roof:

  • Dry Eye Spa – Advanced technology is used to massage the eye area with 108-degree thermal heat. This melts away waxy deposits in the glands and applies enough pressure to the eyelid to open the Meibomian glands which can become clogged when they don’t secrete enough oil into the tears;
  • LASIK is the latest procedure to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. This procedure is completely bladeless with many patients seeing 20/20 within 24 to 36 hours;
  • Facial plastic surgery consultations – facelifts, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, facial resurfacing and other cosmetic surgery by the only double board-certified, Fellowship-trained facial plastic surgeon in Fort Myers.
  • Advanced Anti-Aging Procedures – The new Virtue RF microneedling device delivers radio frequency energy to a variety of depths, regardless of skin type, to stimulate the production of collagen. It can be used for several facial rejuvenation treatments, including skin tightening, acne scarring, stretch marks, scars and improvements in skin texture. Virtue RF is the next generation in RF microneedling technology with less downtime, faster treatment and very little discomfort.

Although women are more likely to use spa services than men, recent data show that men are availing themselves of aesthetic procedures to remain competitive in the workplace. They are requesting laser procedures to tighten and tone problem areas, as well as relax wrinkles with Botox and other dermal fillers. In the past eight years, Botox for men has increased 27 percent.

One of the greatest concerns for aesthetic patients is to receive the best treatments available based on their activity level, social life, and future goals. Choosing the right spa for your goals is paramount to look good, look natural, and feel good.
